Sure enough, Kailyn was at her desk, hard at work. I grabbed a cookie off the tray and rushed in.
“I have great news.” I flopped onto the green leather chair and set the metal box on the floor.
“Ooh, I love great news!” Kailyn sat at her desk, with her glasses on and hair pulled back in a neat chignon. She tapped away at her keyboard, deep in concentration.
Brushing crumbs off my hands, I said, “I need your full focus.” I waited for her to pull her attention away from the computer, take off her glasses, and look at me. “Guess who has a date with Carter Henderson this Friday?”
Kailyn’s eyes widened. “He asked you out?” Hurt colored her features, but she covered with a dimpled smile. “That’s why I always liked him. He has great taste!”
“The date isn’t for me, you goof,” I said. “It’s for you.”
This time, her face showed everything from shock to delight to fear. “I don’t understand.”
I couldn’t believe someone as kind and hilarious as Kailyn didn’t know she was a catch. I was determined to help her figure that out.
“What’s not to understand?” I said. “I saw him at the hardware store and he said how fun it was last night, how good at volleyball you are . . .”
Her face lit up. “Really?”
“Yes! He wants to go out on Friday.” I gave a dramatic wiggle of my eyebrows. “Looks like you’ve got a date with Carter Henderson.”
Once the magnitude of this hit her, Kailyn was up and out of her chair like a hurricane. She tackled me, and we jumped up and down with glee. In the midst of this, a man dressed for a day on the golf course walked into the office and stared at us in surprise.
Kailyn struck a serious pose. “Yes, sir.” She gave him her most professional look. “How can I help you?”
“I have a meeting with Kailyn Barnes? I’m looking for a vacation home. I heard she was the one in town everyone wants to see.”
“You can say that again,” I murmured.
“Yes, sir.” She choked back a giggle. “You’ve come to the right place.”
